5 Reasons Your Computer Is Running Slowly (And How to Fix Them)

If your computer is running slowly, crashing, or just not performing the way it used to, there are a few common causes worth checking before you consider replacing it. At Rolleston Tech Solutions, we see these issues every week, and most of them are straightforward to fix.

1. Your Hard Drive Is Full or Failing

A full hard drive can grind your system to a halt. Windows needs free space for temporary files, updates, and virtual memory. If your drive is more than 85% full, performance will suffer. Worse, if your drive is an older mechanical HDD, it may be physically degrading. An upgrade to an SSD (solid state drive) is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make, often making an old PC feel brand new.

2. Too Many Programs Starting at Boot

Over time, installed software adds itself to your startup routine. Each program takes a slice of your RAM and CPU when you turn on your computer. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), click the Startup tab, and disable anything you do not need immediately at login. Common culprits include Spotify, Teams, Adobe updaters, and cloud sync tools.

3. Malware or Unwanted Software

Viruses, adware, and browser extensions can consume resources without you realising. If you are seeing pop-ups, unexpected browser redirects, or your fan is running constantly, malware could be the cause. Windows Defender is a solid first line of defence, but persistent infections may need professional removal.

4. Outdated Drivers or Windows Updates

Missing driver updates, especially for your graphics card and chipset, can cause instability and sluggish performance. Pending Windows updates can also bog things down while they download and install in the background. Keep your system current and restart regularly to let updates complete.

5. Not Enough RAM

If you are running Windows 11 with only 4GB of RAM, you will struggle with modern workloads. 8GB is the minimum we recommend, and 16GB is ideal for anyone who multitasks or uses resource-heavy applications. RAM upgrades are quick and affordable on most laptops and desktops.
