Should I Repair or Replace My Laptop?

It is one of the most common questions we get asked at Rolleston Tech Solutions: should I spend money repairing my laptop, or is it time to buy a new one? The answer depends on a few factors, and it is not always as clear-cut as you might think.

When Repair Makes Sense

If your laptop is less than five years old and the issue is a failing hard drive, low RAM, a worn-out battery, or a cracked screen, repair is almost always the better option. These are straightforward fixes that cost a fraction of a new machine and can extend the life of your laptop by several more years.

An SSD upgrade is the single most impactful repair we do. Replacing a slow mechanical hard drive with a solid state drive typically costs between $100 and $200 including the drive and labour, and the difference in speed is dramatic. Boot times drop from minutes to seconds, applications open instantly, and the whole system feels responsive again. Compare that to spending $800 or more on a new laptop.

Battery replacements are another common repair that makes financial sense. A new battery for most laptops costs between $80 and $150, and gives you another two to three years of portable use. Without it, you are tethered to a power cable, which defeats the purpose of having a laptop.

When Replacement Makes Sense

If your laptop is more than seven or eight years old, the cost of repair may not be justified. Older machines often have multiple issues — the battery is gone, the screen hinges are loose, the keyboard is worn, and the processor cannot keep up with current software demands. In these cases, putting $300 into repairs on a machine worth $100 is throwing good money after bad.

Motherboard failures are another situation where replacement often makes more sense. If the main board has died and the laptop is more than a few years old, the cost of sourcing and fitting a replacement board can approach or exceed the cost of a new budget laptop. We will always give you an honest assessment.

If your needs have changed significantly — you now work from home and need a bigger screen, or you have started using software that demands more processing power — it may be time to upgrade regardless of whether your current machine can be repaired.

The Middle Ground: Upgrade What Matters

Sometimes the best approach is somewhere in between. If your laptop is three to five years old and generally works fine but feels slow, a targeted upgrade can be more cost-effective than a full replacement. We often recommend upgrading the storage to an SSD and adding more RAM as a first step. If the laptop responds well to those changes, you have bought yourself another few years without the expense and hassle of setting up a brand new machine.
